At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day.

Almost half the world – over 3 billion people – live on less than $2.50 per day.

There are 2.2 billion children in the world and 1 billion live in poverty.

Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.

According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day from poverty.

Many children in third world countries are exposed to great risk of violence, drug abuse and teen pregnancy. Most have no access to any type of sporting facilitiy.

FUNDaFIELD understands that sports can be a vital tool for the development of children in Africa, improving overall health and physical development, improving mental abilities, developing social skills and interactions all while providing for the child to have fun and challenge themselves in the sporting arena.

The facts we have discovered about Africa are shocking.

  1. ➡Twenty percent of Africa's children die before the age of five. Africa has the highest infant mortality rate in the world.

  2. ➡118 African babies out of every 1,000 born alive die before their first birthday.

  3. ➡One African in three is malnourished.

  4. ➡More than 50 percent of Africans suffer from water-related diseases such as cholera and infant diarrhea.

  5. ➡More than 40 percent of Africans do not have the ability to obtain sufficient food on a day-to-day basis.

  6. ➡Nearly two million African adults and children died from AIDS in 2005. Nine out of 10 children living with HIV/AIDS are African. More than 12 million African children have lost one or both parents to AIDS. HIV/AIDS has created more than 14 million orphans — 92 percent of them live in Africa.

FUNDaFIELD can’t solve all the problems that exist in Africa, we wish we could. Therefore, our goal is to form a partnership with organizations that have made it their mission to provide food, medicine, shelter and education to students. Once they have the infrastructures in place and the schools built, FUNDaFIELD will be able to provide a safe field with equipment to play the game of soccer. A short break each day from living with disease, hunger and all that accompanies poverty. Play and sports are tools that teach important values and life skills including confidence, teamwork, communication, discipline, respect and fair play. Sports can have a positive impact on children’s education and can improve a child’s ability to learn, while increasing their ability to concentrate. Children learn better when they are having fun and being active.

All of us on the FUNDaFIELD team have benefited from having sports in our lives, kids everywhere should have the same opportunities. We are working to make it happen.

Why Soccer?

As Nelson Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world.”

FUNDaFIELD can’t cure disease and can’t fill every empty stomach. FUNDaFIELD can put a smile on a face, where there wasn’t one before.

Ssekamwa Isaac Mugabi is our Uganda country director. He shares his thoughts on what FUNDaFIELD brings to Uganda.

As FUNDaFIELD continues with its vision and mission for Africa, it is clear why sport is such an important part of bringing communities together here in Uganda. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world with over 3.5 billion fans worldwide.

The fan frenzy is also a reflection of a second, more subtle reality: the critical role soccer plays within African society. In the United States, Europe, and other developed nations, the game exists somewhere between sport and big business. But in Africa, a continent rife with factionalism and hostility, soccer remains a potent symbol of hope and healing. The miracle of the game lies in its simplicity -- it is cheap, easy to play, and the rules are plain to follow. When a ball is kicked, ethnic differences, politics and hatred just melt away.

Soccer instils a sense of unity to the players, youths and community at large. The message is simple: If they don't play together, they won't score goals. FUNDaFIELD uses soccer to deliver a simple message to the nation of Uganda: Citizens must work together and put aside old differences so the country can progress.

The game requires teams to rise above ethnic tensions in Uganda caused by the Kony war. The FUNDaFIELD tournaments teach players soccer is a game and not a battleground. They must learn to rise above ethnic tensions and play as a team. Can they? We believe that by the time the credits roll, unity will be gripped. And our mission will be to have this unity live on such that in the future different tribes and religions are able and continue to meet in school, church, and mosque discussion groups tackling complex agendas, such as sexual exploitation and AIDS awareness, inspired by these FUNDaFIELD tournaments.

Sharing the mission,

Mugabi Isaac
